Washington Leadership Conference 2017
Waverly Shell Rock FFA Attends Washington Leadership Conference
Jenna Steffen and Izzy Trafelet from the Waverly Shell Rock FFA Chapter attended the Washington Leadership Conference this past June. Students from across the nation attended the 2017 Washington Leadership Conference this summer at the nation’s capital. The conference is an activity of the National FFA Organization sponsored by Monsanto as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
The week long program helps FFA members improve their leadership skills and prepare for leadership roles in their chapters, communities and future careers. Jenna and Izzy attended sessions on developing authentic leadership, serving their communities and participating in civic engagement. They also participated in service learning. The National FFA Organization coordinates WLC, which attracts participants from across the country. Students also increase their understanding of the nation’s heritage with visits to Arlington National Cemetery, the Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt Memorials and other historic sites in Washington, D.C.
Izzy and Jenna's intentions were to bring back valuable knowledge of leadership to our chapter. During our interview I asked them, what did they learn that was valuable to bring back to the chapter? they said, “Don’t be afraid to try new things, go out of your comfort zone to work with other people.” At the conference each attendee creates a plan for community service or helping to better the world. There plan was, “To package food for Food for the Heartland.” When asked if they would recommend this to other FFA members, they replied with, “We would highly recommend this to other FFA members.” Lastly I asked them, what was there favorite memory of the conference? They responded with, “My favorite part was the four hours free time, where we got to explore Washington D.C. The Ford’s Theater, where Abraham Lincoln got shot, the Holocaust Museum and one of the Smithsonian Museums is what I got a chance to see. In the Smithsonian my highlight was the opportunity to see the FFA Jacket Jimmy Carter, our 39th President of the United States, wore when he was in FFA.”
